Introduction to YAMAS

 INTRODUCTION

In current era whole world is practicing yoga but miss conception about yoga is that yoga is only physical practice but it has some theory and spiritual aspect too."YAMAS" in simple term called the rules to follow if yogi wants to meet the divine. Maharshi patanjali showed eight pillars of yoga is called "ASTANGA YOGA"(yoga which has eight stage).

In simple terms "YAMAS" means "self control"  (आत्म संयम) .For the very first time "YAMAS" world was introduced in the world in the "RIGVEDA".More than 50 Indian scriptures have used word "YAMAS". In Indian scripture "YAGYAVALYAKA SMRITI" (याज्ञवल्यक स्मृति) there is 10 "YAMAS" mentioned.

According to Maharshi Patanjali YAMAS are SARVBHAUM MAHAVRATAS (सावॅभौम महावत)...

Which  means "In any situation,in any time, at any place, universally human should follow the rules"

There is two parts of YAMAS

1.MAIN YAMAS

2.SECONDARY YAMAS

                            MAIN YAMAS

1.AHINSA(अहिंसा)

2.SATYA (सत्य)

3.ASTEYA(अस्तेय)

4.BRAMHACHARYA(बृम्हचयॅ)

5.APARIGRAHA(अपरिगृह)

Every YAMAS has it's own deep explaination but here we will have bird's eye  view.

1.AHINSA(अहिंंसा)

If we see very easiest meaning of  "AHINSA" is " Don't harm any human and animal by heart,by actions,by thought is called Ahinsa"

According to me "AHINSA" is the purest form of love, you will never harm that person or animal by heart,by thought,by actions .

If human follow the AHINSA ,one will never has thought of fighting physically and vocally so the relations between the humans will be healthy .

2.SATYA(सत्य)

In simple language SATYA means TRUTH

Don't practice fraud with society is one of the part of the SATYA .By stopping the fraud behaviour will help human to accept and follow the path of truth. By following practice of SATYA will develope the "SATTVAGUNA"in human and that will lead to mental peace which is the ultimate goal of mankind now a days in this stressful life.

3.ASTEYA(अस्तेय)

In simple term ASTEYA means "Don't steal other's belongings "

Opposite word is "STEYA" which means " to steal other's belongings"

Without taking the permission of the owner of the things to take or to use that thing is considered as "STEYA".If we connect the dots the root of stealing is "ENVY"

If we stop practice of ENVY the path of the " ASTEYA" will be easy.

4.BRAMHACHARYA(बृम्हचयॅ)

In simple terms BRAMHACHARYA means " Abandonment of sex by heart,by actions,by thought is called BRAMHACHARYA.

Those who are practicing Yog they have to  stay away  from heterosexual attraction and do focus on yog practices.

Those who are in married ;ife they have to practice restraint .

5.APARIGRAHA (अपरिगृह)

In simple terms APARIGRAHA means" Do not store unnecessary things ."

Opposite of APARIGRAHA is "PARIGRAHA"which means "To store things which are not necessary currently".

Be satisfies by what u get by your hardwork and do not store anything more than basic needs these are the characteristics of APARIGRAHA.

Those who practice yog in daily life  they should walk on the path of simplicity

Maharshi Patanjali indicates these five as main YAMAS (MAHAVRATAS)

                                    SECONDARY YAMAS

1.KSHAMA(क्षमा)

2.DHRUTI(धृति)

3.DAYA(दया)

4.AARJAV(आजॅव)

5.MITAHAR(मिताहार)

Every secondary YAMAS has it's own deep explaination but here we will have bird's eye view.

1.KSHAMA(क्षमा)

According to Bhagvad Gita" KSHAMA IS THE SIGN OF HEROIC MAN" it is said because it is very hard to forgive someone who hurt you, harm you.

If one hurts you by thoughts, heart, actions so don't think about taking revenge but practice KSHAMA in your behaviour.

2.DHRUTI(धृति)

In simple terms DHRUTI means "To accept"."To put on" "To hold" is called DHRUTI.

YAMAS are very important for yogi as well as other human beings so DHRUTI teaches us to follow YAMA religiously "TO HOLD".

That's why DHRUTI is included in the secondary YAMAS

3DAYA(दया)

Daya is sanskrit word that is usually translated as "COMPASSION".It derives from the root word,da,meaning "GIFT".and is concept in Hinduism and Sikhism in which empathy is felt for the suffering of others.

It is total identifications with what the others are experiencing and, therefore, the compelling need to relieve that suffering.

4.AARJAV(आजॅव)

In simple term AARJAV means "STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS"

Don't avoid anyone intentionally,if someone seek help from you and you intentionally avoid so its against YAMAS . If you want to help say yes if you don't want to help say no .But do not avoid this is simply what AARJAV means.

5.MITAHARA(मिताहार)

In simple langauge MITAHARA means human should eat only half of the capacity of stomach and from the other half half is for water and other half keep empty for breathing This is MITAHARA.

This was brief about YAMAS .
